Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): An Innovative Hair Transplant Technique

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) represents a significant advancement in hair transplantation. Unlike earlier methods, FUE involves removing individual hair follicles from the donor area (typically the back of the head where hair is more resistant to balding) and implanting them into the balding regions. This technique has become highly popular due to its minimally invasive approach and the natural-looking results it provides.

The procedure begins with numbing the donor area, followed by the extraction of individual hair follicles using a precise microsurgical tool. Each follicle is meticulously removed with its essential tissues and sebaceous glands intact, ensuring their vitality and enhancing the success of the transplant.

After extraction, the follicles are prepared for transplantation. Tiny incisions are made in the recipient area to place the follicles, a process requiring the expertise of a skilled surgeon to ensure the hair grows in a natural pattern and direction, seamlessly blending with existing hair.

Initially termed Follicular Unit Extraction, this technique was introduced in 2002 by Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Rassman. It involves using a small, circular punch to extract individual follicular units from the donor area and implant them in the recipient area. Despite facing initial criticism, this method gained popularity in subsequent years.

In 2018, the term 'extraction' was replaced by 'excision' to highlight the minimally invasive nature of the procedure and avoid misleading patients. FUE is slightly time-consuming, making it suitable for individuals with smaller areas of baldness and those needing fewer grafts.

Steps of FUE:

  1. Creating slits in the recipient site.
  2. Extracting the required follicular units or follicles from the donor area and placing them in a holding solution.
  3. Implanting the grafts in the recipient area using implanters or forceps.

Advantages of FUE:

  1. Minimally Invasive: FUE does not require stitches or staples in the donor area.
  2. Less Post-Operative Discomfort: Patients usually experience minimal discomfort post-surgery.
  3. No Linear Scar: Unlike the strip method, FUE leaves no visible linear scar, making it ideal for those who prefer short hairstyles.
  4. Quick Recovery: The recovery period is relatively short, with most individuals resuming normal activities within a few days.
  5. Suitable for Decreased Scalp Laxity: FUE is the technique of choice for individuals with decreased scalp laxity.
